Smith Center ? An effort to save the rural Kansas cabin where “Home on the Range” was written in 1872 is attracting attention and money.

In only a few weeks, more than $25,000 has been raised to save Brewster Higley’s cabin in Smith County, and donations continue to arrive.

The Hutchinson News reports that a concert May 5 featuring cowboy singer Michael Martin Murphey raised $20,500, and another $5,000 came from other fundraising efforts.

Organizers say between $80,000 and $100,000 is needed to completely restore the cabin. The money raised so far will allow trustees to apply for preservation grant funding.

Higley wrote a poem, which he called “My Western Home” while living in north-central Kansas. It later was set to music and eventually became the Kansas state song.
