City regional pairings released for high school spring sports

Lawrence and Free State high schools will meet in a first-round Class 6A regional softball matchup Tuesday, and FSHS will play host to a baseball regional on Wednesday.

The spring-sport regional pairings were completed after meetings Saturday and released by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.

Third-seeded LHS (12-8) will meet sixth-seeded FSHS (9-11) at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Hummer Sports Park in a first-round softball regional. The winner will advance to face second-seeded Topeka (13-7) or seventh-seeded Junction City (2-18) in the 6:30 p.m. championship. The winner of that game will advance to state, which will run May 27-28 at Kansas University’s Arrocha Ballpark.

In baseball regionals, second-seeded Free State (15-5) will host seventh-seeded Junction City (7-13) at 4:30 p.m. at FSHS. The winner will advance to the 7 p.m. championship game against either third-seeded Wichita Heights (14-6) or sixth-seeded Leavenworth (11-9).

Fifth-seeded Lawrence (11-9) will face fourth-seeded Washburn Rural (13-7) at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Manhattan, with the winner advancing to the 7 p.m. championship against No. 1 Manhattan (17-3) or No. 8 Topeka (3-17).

Free State also will host a Class 6A soccer regional Tuesday. Fourth-seeded FSHS (9-6-1) will entertain No. 5 Junction City (6-9-1) at 6:30 p.m. The winner will advance to a 6 p.m. game Thursday at Manhattan, against No. 1 Manhattan (14-2) or No. 8 Leavenworth (2-14).

Seventh-seeded Lawrence (4-12) will travel to second-seeded Washburn Rural (10-5-1) at 6 p.m. Tuesday. That winner will return to Rural to face No. 3 Wichita Heights (10-6) or No. 6 Topeka (6-10).

And 12-seeded Seabury Academy will face No. 5 seed Bonner Springs (6-9-1) in a Class 4-1A regional at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Bonner. The winner of that game will face No. 4 Lenexa St. James Academy (6-8-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bonner Springs.
