40 years ago: KPL unveils new power plant north of Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 14, 1971:

Kansas Power & Light Co. officials gave a tour of their new electric generating plant to news reporters and other interested parties. The 430,000 kilowatt plant, located on the Kansas River just north of Lawrence, was scheduled to become fully operational by the end of the month, increasing the company’s generating capacity by 40 percent. Company leaders said that KPL was still using coal primarily for generating its electricity, but they noted that “the last Kansas coal now is committed” and that the company would have to look to Wyoming and New Mexico for its coal supplies. They noted that the Lawrence plant could also operate on natural gas.

Kansas University police reported that 17 wooden gate arms from the entrances to Parking Zone X had been found piled near the south entrance to the lot. Police said that the gate arms, which were valued at $7.50 apiece, could be reused unless they were badly damaged. There was no indication as to the identity of the anonymous donor.
