25 years ago: Community bicyclists form new club

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 14, 1986:

  • Members of Kansas University’s Mount Oread Bicycle Club, which had been allowing community cyclists to join in their activities, had recently discovered that their open-membership policy was in violation of the liability insurance policy carried by KU. Since the Mount Oread club now had to limit its membership to KU students, faculty, staff, and their spouses, community members had formed the new Lawrence Bicycle Club. The new group was planning to have bicycle tours every Sunday through mid-October, weather permitting. So far they had scheduled a 45-minute ride to McLouth and a 34-mile ride at Lone Star Lake. Both clubs were planning to sponsor the 80-mile Octoginta tour on Oct. 19.
  • An early-morning blaze had caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to an east Lawrence furniture store. The fire at Michael’s Furniture Warehouse, 1547 E. 23rd, had been reported at 4:18 a.m. and was under control by 6 a.m. In addition to damage to the building itself, it appeared that all the inventory had been either burned, partly burned or blackened by smoke. Fire officials were expected to remain at the scene throughout the day seeking the fire’s cause and point of origin.
