40 years ago: Jury returns guilty verdict in local shooting death

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 13, 1971:

  • A jury in Douglas County District Court had returned a guilty verdict for Andrew Leroy Hill, 26, of Chicago. Hill had been found guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Bruce Douglas and Paula George on Nov. 4 at an apartment complex at 2430 Ousdahl. County Attorney Mike Elwell had argued against Hill’s defense of accidental shooting, questioning the possibility of the 13 gunshots being “accidental” and pointing out that Hill, who had denied knowing that the couple was in the adjoining apartment’s bedroom, had had many ways of being aware that they were in fact there. Elwell contended that jealousy was the reason that Hill fired the shots.
  • A “very responsive” audience of 800 to 1,000 music lovers greeted the efforts of young musicians with a standing ovation on a recent night. More than 850 Lawrence High School instrumentalists and vocalists had participated in the annual Festival of Music program in the school’s gymnasium.
