Lane man killed in one-vehicle accident southeast of Ottawa

A Lane man was killed Tuesday evening in a single-vehicle accident southeast of Ottawa, Franklin County’s Sheriff’s officials said.

According to a sheriff’s office report, Richard Nichols, 45, of Lane, died after he was ejected from the 2005 Dodge pickup truck he was driving about 7 p.m. Tuesday near Rantoul in the 4100 block of John Brown Road.

Nichols was headed east on the road “at a high rate of speed” when the truck left the road and rolled, according to the report. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene.

Rantoul is about 15 miles southeast of Ottawa, and Lane is about 22 miles southeast of Ottawa.
