40 years ago: Former KU student takes stand in murder trial

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 11, 1971:

Former Kansas University student Andrew Hill, 26, recently had taken the stand in his own behalf in a first-degree murder case in Douglas County District Court. Hill testified that he had been “messing around” with what he had thought was an unloaded gun in his apartment bedroom when the gun had discharged, firing 13 bullets into the bedroom of an adjoining apartment. The shots had killed Bruce A. Douglas and wounded Paula George, both KU students. Hill testified that he had been feeling “distraught” because of low grades and landlord problems, but that he had not known that anyone was in the adjoining apartment’s bedroom at the time. Hill said that the first two shots had been accidental and that he had fired the remaining shots “because of his anger and frustrations.” He testified further that he had owned the gun for about a month and normally kept it unloaded. The court proceedings were proceeding rapidly, and the jury was expected to begin deliberations immediately.
