Hundreds of fish die in Wichita pond

? The record heat in Wichita might have been a big factor that led to the death of hundreds of fish in a Wichita pond.

The fish are dying at Buffalo Park pond in west Wichita because of lack of water. The city expects up to 1,000 fish could eventually die.

City parks director Doug Kupper says the pond is leaking water and an invasive plant is has been removing oxygen for the last couple of years. He says recent hot weather evaporated more of the water and accelerated the kill. Temperatures in Wichita reached 100 degrees Monday, breaking a heat record of 95 set in 1895.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the city will allow the pond to drain completely to fix the leaks and destroy the invasive plant.
