Lawsuit dismissed after settlement reached in 2009 alcohol poisoning death at Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity

A Douglas County judge on Friday formally dismissed a 2009 lawsuit over the alcohol poisoning death of a Kansas University Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity pledge after the parties reached a confidential settlement last month.

According to court records, District Judge Michael Malone dismissed Jay Wren’s lawsuit against the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter, its national association, the local housing corporation and its president and some chapter members. Wren’s son, Jason Wren, a 19-year-old freshman from Littleton, Colo., was found dead March 8, 2009, at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter house, 1301 West Campus Road, after a night of heavy drinking.

On April 5 the parties in a statement said the case had been resolved to the satisfaction of all sides without providing any specific details about the resolution. The parties did acknowledge that the Jason Wren Initiative, an annual seminar on the KU campus aimed at providing education about underage drinking, would continue.

Court personnel said Malone dismissed the case at the request of the parties but that no other details were filed.
