Around and About for May 7, 2011

Jason and Carrie Kahle, Webb City, Mo., announce the birth of their daughter, Elizabeth Joan Kahle, on March 28, 2011, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo.

Her maternal grandparents are Charles and Joan Dannenberg, Holton; her paternal grandparents are Randall and Elizabeth Anne Kahle, Big Springs, Kansas.

Her paternal great-grandmother is Josephine Fisher, Kansas City, Kan.

Thirteen Free State High School seniors will be recognized at the May 12 concert in the school’s auditorium, 4700 Overland Drive. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.

Program highlights include Bela Bartok’s “Rumanian Folk Dances,” plus the “Sentimental Saraband” and “Frolicsome Finale” from Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony. The concert will open with performances of small ensembles that performed at the State Solo/Ensemble Festival on April 30 at Emporia State University.

Lawrence chess team members Eddie Wilson and Sam Beaulieu (both of Central Junior High School), Apramay Mishra (Sunflower School) and Kaustubh Nimkar (Southwest Junior High School), competed at the second annual Intercontinental School Chess Teams Championship held April 1-3 in McPherson. The Lawrence team tied for first with a Russian team from St. Petersburg, and finished second on tie-breakers competing in the U16 division. The event was presented by The Federation of International des Echecs, The United States Chess Federation, Kansas Scholastic Chess Association, International Educational and Cultural Services, and the Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess in Lindsborg.
