40 years ago: Fiery KS turnpike collision destroys two semis
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 7, 1971:
- A large three-vehicle accident at milepost 39.8 of the Kansas Turnpike, about four miles west of the West Lawrence interchange, caused about $47,000 in damage but, fortunately, only one injury. All three semi-trailer trucks were headed west when one collided with another while the driver was attempting to pass. The impact had ruptured the fuel tank in the first truck, and when the tank fell off, a third truck approaching the scene ran over it. Two of the trucks, for which the contents were not listed, were destroyed by fire. The third truck, which was reportedly carrying dynamite, did not catch fire. The roadway was blocked for most of the day.
- Two lawsuits, asking total damages of $294,260.51, had been filed in the Douglas County District Court as a result of a fatal fire on Sept. 27, 1970, at the Renz Apartments, 1301 Louisiana. One suit for $227,597.96 was filed by Albert A. Kihm and Barbara A. Kihm of Chanute, whose daughter Kathryn had died on Oct. 14 as a result of injuries suffered in the fire.
