Police arrest Franklin County man, juvenile as part of Lawrence robbery investigation

Lawrence police early Friday morning arrested a 22-year-old Richmond man in Ottawa as a suspect in connection with two robberies that occurred in central Lawrence earlier this year.

A Lawrence man reported March 20 to police two separate alleged robberies that occurred in February and March at his residence in the 800 block of Hilltop Drive, near Ninth and Iowa streets, Capt. Paul Fellers said.

The victim alleged in February an acquaintance of his and another person armed with a gun tied him up and stole money and other property from his residence.

He also alleged a second armed robbery involving several individuals occurred there in mid-March, Fellers said, when a pistol, computer, a video game system and cell phone were taken. The alleged victim said he was struck in the face and received treatment a few days later at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for a facial injury.

Detectives served a search warrant at a Franklin County residence and eventually arrested the 22-year-old man and a juvenile as suspects. Fellers said officers believe the adult suspect was involved in both alleged robberies. He was arrested on two counts of aggravated robbery, one count of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated burglary.

Douglas County prosecutors did not file formal charges against the adult suspect Friday. Cheryl Wright, a district attorney’s office spokeswoman, said the man likely would appear todaySaturday before a judge who would set his bond, meaning formal charges wouldn’t need to be filed until Monday.

The Journal-World generally does not identify suspects unless they are formally charged.
