Worth a visit

Legislators should take advantage of the opportunity to visit historic Lecompton.

Taking advantage of an invitation to visit historical Lecompton on May 20 would be a great way for Kansas legislators to celebrate the state’s 150th birthday.

After lengthy negotiations, the Kansas House this week approved a resolution honoring the pivotal role Lecompton played in events leading up to the U.S. Civil War. Legislative leaders are scheduled to travel to Lecompton on May 20 to sign the resolution, and all state legislators have been invited to attend.

We know the people of Lecompton will roll out the red carpet for this event and make it well worth the 20-mile trip from Topeka, and even farther if legislators have managed to finish their work and head home. Although Lecompton has dwindled in size, the town still is proud of the heritage that a dedicated group of volunteers works hard to preserve and promote.

We congratulate Lecompton on this recognition of its important history and urge lawmakers to take the time to visit this important historic site.
