Softball openings: The DC Attack fastpitch softball organization has one opening for its 12-and-under team, two openings for the 14-and-under squad and one opening for the 18-and-under team. Girls fast pitch: The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for the 2011 Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Softball Summer Leagues through April 8. 8-U (coach pitch) teams and leagues will be formed by individual registrations from schools and grades. 8-U players must be 8 years old or younger on Jan. 1, 2011. Participation fee is $65. The 10-U, 12-U, 14-U and 16-U Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Softball Summer Leagues are now taking team registration for the 2011 season, through Friday. Player’s eligibility is determined by age as of Jan. 1, 2011. Team registration is $900. Softball tourney: The City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation, in conjunction with Lawrence Softball Umpire Association, will host the Lawrence Preseason Girls 12-Under Class B-C Fast Pitch Invitational Tournament on April 30 and May 1 at Lawrence’s Youth Sports Complex. Horsehoe pitching: Anyone interested in pitching horseshoes at Broken Arrow on Thursday evenings should contact Wynne at 843-8450.

Wayne Simien Free Throw Challenge: Six age divisions (fourth and fifth grade; sixth, seventh and eighth grade; high school; 29 and under; 54 and under; and 55 and over) are eligible to compete for prizes in individual and team competitions April 9-10 in a benefit free-throw contest. The first round is Saturday, April 9 at five area gyms. The finals are 2-4 p.m. on April 10 at Allen Fieldhouse. Trophies, medals and prizes will be awarded. Special Olympics Kansas Crappie Tournament: A crappie tournament to benefit Special Olympics Kansas will be 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 at Clinton Lake Boat Ramp No. 2. Tournament sign-in will be from 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. The registration is $80 for a two-person team if you sign up before April 22. It will $100 per two-person team to sign up the morning of the tournament. Registration form, waiver, rules and a list of sponsors are available at Boat number is determined by registration order. Softball opening: 10U DC Attack girls fastpitch team is looking for an experienced pitcher to join the team. The pitcher will get significant mound time through tournaments and league play. Reasonable fees. Call Steve Patton 785-865-4136 for more information.

Wrestling club: The Douglas County Gold Freestyle/Greco-Roman wrestling club will begin April 5 at the South Gym in Baldwin City, located at Eighth & Chapel Streets. Practices from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. No fee, but USA card required. All ages and skill levels welcome.

Aquahawks tryout: The Lawrence Aquahawks will be holding a new swimmer tryout at 4:15 p.m. on April 4 at the Indoor Aquatic Center. This tryout is open to ages 5-18. Participants should bring suit, towel and goggles if you have a pair. For information, contact coach Zach Devine at 393-7966.

Houk League registration: Late registrations are being accepted through April 5 for the Houk Baseball League. Arthritis WALK: The North East Chapter of the Kansas Arthritis Foundation will hold the sixth annual WALK for Arthritis in Lawrence. The event, a 5K and one-mile course, will begin at the Gazebo in South Park (12th & Mass streets) on May 7th. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Bring your dog (it’s a dog walk, too). LHS softball camp: Lawrence High will hold a softball camp at its new field on campus from May 31 to June 3 for students entering grades 3-12. 3-on-3 hoops league: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State coach Bryan Duncan will be offering a 3-on-3 basketball league this spring for girls enrolled in grades 5-8. The league will be split up into a fifth-/sixth-grade division and a seventh-/eighth-grade division. Each team will play four, 10-minute games a night. Girls basketball workouts: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State High girls coach Bryan Duncan will host spring basketball workouts for girls in grades 5-8. The workouts will be at FSHS and will be on Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:45 p.m. The workouts will begin April 6 and run through May 18. Softball player sought: The 12U 4U2NV girls softball team is looking for pitcher, catcher and other key positions with significant playing time on the field. Tryouts will be 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at YSC (formally YSI) fields 5 and 6, or contact for a private tryout.

Aquahawks Academy: The Lawrence Aquahawks enrollment for the Aquahawk Swim Academy, a swim lesson program, is now open and accepting registrations. The Aquahawk Swim Academy is designed to introduce new and beginner swimmers to the water, teach water safety and basic skills needed to swim for fun or competition. Girls summer basketball: Lawrence High girls basketball coach Nick Wood and Free State coach Bryan Duncan will be offering competitive summer teams for girls that will be enrolled in grades 5-8 next school year. Players will have the option of playing in up to five local tournaments in June and July. There will be a parent meeting on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Free State High. KU bowling club news: Free State High graduate Alex Hardman of Lawrence is one of the members of the Kansas University bowling team, a club sport. The team will compete in the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships in Columbus, Ga., April 20-24.

LHS wrestling camp: Lawrence High wil host a summer wrestling camp June 13-15 at LHS. There will be two sessions (morning and afternoon) daily and is for grades 1-12. For more information, email

Orchards couples league: A couples golf league will begin play at 5 p.m. on May 14 at the Orchards. Once a month there will be a cook-out at the clubhouse following play. Couples interested please call Ed White, 843-7456.

Orchards junior league: A junior golf league for boys and girls ages 10 to 14 will start at 9 a.m. on June 8 at the Orchards. Play will continue until school starts. A reasonable skill level required to join. Entry fee is $10 and green fees are $8. for nine holes. Those that join will be allowed this same green fee through-out the season.
