A 36-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Thursday evening after being involved in two separate accidents near the downtown area.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Dave Hubbel, the incident occurred about 7 p.m. near the intersection of Sixth and Massachusetts streets. The suspect's vehicle struck another near the intersection and continued westbound, rolling up over the curb. The suspect's vehicle had a broken axle and lost one wheel but continued rolling along, striking another vehicle near Sixth and Vermont streets.

Hubbel said the victim from the first accident had followed the suspect on foot as the vehicle continued to roll in an attempt to possibly apprehend the man. The suspect, who had exited the vehicle carrying a sledgehammer and boots, continued away from the scene through a parking lot near Dempsey's Burger Pub, 623 Vermont.

Police caught up to the suspect and arrested him there. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report and accident, public consumption, open container and driving while intoxicated.

No one was reported injured.

One vehicle crashing through a building.... another slowly rolling along with a busted axis, after colliding with other vehicles and a curb... Strange days indeed. People seem to be getting their drunk on early in the day this week.

Haha! That should read, "...busted axle." This is what 4 hours of sleep followed by a long, hectic day does to one's typing skills.

Hope you got some rest.

At least taking the sledgehammer would quell any suspicion about him being up to something.

Heard about it first hand from a good friend who was using the ATM where the car went up over the curb. If he hadn't jumped out of the way he would've been hit. All the details match -- including the boots. According to him, the boot laces were tied together for easy carrying.

Good pic. I believe that in the upper left corner is the officer taking down the wrong person. The two were fighting and I believe the other was trying to stop the perp. He then figured it out and then tackled "boot man" in front of Dempsey's. This from an eyewitness.
