25 years ago: Lower gas prices result in decreased taxi fares

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 30, 1986:

Local gas prices, which had recently dropped from 1.29 down to 69 cents, were resulting in lower taxi fares in Lawrence. Ward Thompson, owner of Yellow Cab Co., said that flat-rate prices had been dropped from $3.50 per local trip to $2.50. “It’s hard to start up your own car for under $2.50, so I think we may see a slight increase in use,” he said.

Attorneys were arguing before the Kansas Supreme Court that state utility regulators had acted illegally when they had slashed rate increase requests of utility owners of the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant. The utilities — Kansas Gas and Electric Co. of Wichita, Kansas City Power & Light Co., and the Kansas Electric Power Cooperative Inc. of Topeka — had asked the court to overturn the rate order.

U.S. Sen. Nancy Landon Kassebaum, R-Kan., was scheduled to give a keynote address at a two-day celebration of Kansas women. “Celebrate Women Who Care About Kansas” was to be sponsored by the Emily Taylor Women’s Resource Center at Kansas University.
