40 years ago: Plans stalled for nuclear waste site in central Kansas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 24, 1971:

  • In Lyons, Kan., a proposed nuclear waste repository was on hold. Gov. Robert Docking had asked the joint congressional committee on nuclear energy to postpone funding until tests were completed to prove to Kansans that the facility would be safe. “Kansans are concerned,” wrote Docking, “and with justification, that if funds are approved by your committee to continue this project, then we will be unable to halt it if problems are encountered.”
  • The Teen Action Group of First United Methodist Church had arranged a pick-up program for cans and bottles. During the preceding week, the group had made 42 stops on their route. The recyclables were being taken to the Kansas University reclamation center at the stadium.
