25 years ago: Parents express concerns about pertussis vaccine

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 24, 1986:

  • The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department was receiving numerous calls after an Associated Press story had appeared in the Journal-World about an Emporia woman whose baby had died four days after receiving a DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) vaccination. As the pertussis portion of the vaccine was usually blamed for the rare, but sometimes fatal, reaction to the shots, some parents were requesting that their child be given only the diphtheria and tetanus portions. However, a health department official warned that the risks of the vaccine must be compared with the risks of the disease. Lawrence had had two cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in the last decade, most recently in 1983, and in both cases the child had been unvaccinated.
  • There was joy in the hearts of Kansas University basketball fans this morning, as KU had beaten North Carolina State and had advanced to the Final Four for the first time in 12 years. The Jayhawks were headed to Dallas to face top-rated Duke on Saturday.
