100 years ago: Streetcar collides with Flory family buggy

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 24, 1911:

  • “Striking a rig driven by J. M. Flory with sufficient force to cut loose the team from the vehicle and carry the buggy box across the street on the fender, a southbound New Jersey street car threw the three occupants of the buggy out on the brick pavement and perhaps seriously injured Martin Flory this afternoon. The team driven by J. M. Flory seemed to balk when the street car was almost upon the rig. The motorman was powerless to stop his heavy car, and it crashed into the light buggy at almost full speed. The team was cut loose from the vehicle and ran away. The Florys live near Lone Star and had been in town trading. They claim that they did not hear the car approaching and no warning signal of its proximity was given. The buggy is a complete wreck and the team are supposed to have gone on home.”
  • “A conference will be held this week which may result in the purchase and reopening of the local canning factory. The factory was closed by Poehler’s not long ago with the announcement that it will not be reopened this summer. The present people propose to purchase the factory outright and open it immediately.”
