25 years ago: Tongie residents face junior-high bond issue

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 22, 1986:

In Tonganoxie, residents voting in the April 8 election were to face a proposed bond issue for the construction of a junior high school. As recently as September 1984, the voters had rejected a similar proposal which had included a high-school addition as well as a junior high. Tonganoxie school board president Mildred McMillon said that the school was “bulging at the seams” and that if the trend of enrollment growth were to continue, the school would be “in some very, very bad circumstances” without a new building. According to the school superintendent, the old junior high building, which was built for 180 students, was currently serving 262 students.
