From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 21, 1986:

  • During a visit in January 1984, Michigan Gov. James Blanchard had remarked that Kansas was “boring” and that Kansans’ “idea of a fancy hotel is a Holiday Inn.” His comments were now returning to haunt him, as Kansas Gov. John Carlin had issued a challenge to Blanchard based on the outcome of the NCAA basketball game between Kansas University and Michigan State University. If Michigan State were to win, Blanchard would be a guest for a weekend “in his favorite Kansas hotel, the Holidome in Lawrence,” said Carlin. If KU were to win, Carlin would be Blanchard’s guest for a weekend on Mackinac Island, Michigan.
  • KU had unveiled plans for a new science library, a 92,000-square-foot building to be constructed on the south slope behind Hoch Auditorium. The $13.9 million project was slated to begin construction in the spring of 1987, with the library ready for use by fall of 1989.

Sounds like a win-win for Carlin. Either he gets to have his revenge on the Michigan governor, or he gets to stay on Mackinac Island as his guest..... Anyone remember how that game turned out???
