40 years ago: New police car involved in accident

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 20, 1971:

  • A Lawrence police car incurred an estimated $375 in damages when it was struck by another car on Murphy Drive near Ridge Court. This was the fourth collision involving police department cars since the new units had been delivered about three weeks earlier. In this instance, the other car was cited for driving left of center and for driving with a windshield obstructed by frost.
  • Lawrence drivers were not expected to be scraping ice off their cars for much longer. Spring was official arriving on this day, and temperatures were forecast to be much milder. The Lawrence area had experienced a span of nearly 50 degrees during the week, from a Sunday high of 72 to a morning low on this day of 23 degrees.
