25 years ago: NRA rep starts petition against new handgun ordinance
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 20, 1986:
- A petition drive was underway in Lawrence to either repeal or force a public vote on a new handgun law. The ordinance, which required a three-day waiting period between the time a person buys and takes possession of a handgun, had received final approval from city commissioners this week and was scheduled to take effect shortly. John Barrett, a local attorney and representative of the National Rifle Association, had told commissioners that he planned to circulate a petition for an ordinance repealing the new law.
- City commissioners had also cleared the way for the development of an elderly-housing complex and residential housing on a large open tract in southern Lawrence. The area was bounded generally by Crestline and Lawrence, 27th and 31st streets.
- Lawrence teachers had presented a $1.8 million salary proposal to the school district on the previous evening. The plan included an average 12 percent pay increase and the hiring of about 20 new grade school teachers.
