40 years ago: Lawrence resident harvests syrup from front-yard maple trees

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 19, 1971:

  • It was mid-March, and the sap was rising. Kansas may be known more as a wheat state than a syrup state, but Lawrence resident Mr. A. B. Commons was recalling his long-ago boyhood in eastern Illinois as he tapped the sugar maple trees in the yard of his home at 1706 Learnard. When he started boiling down the sap on his kitchen stove, “the house took on a delicious aroma — like the smell of the best maple-cured bacon being fried.” Commons’ operation had yielded three pints of maple syrup so far, he said.
  • The televised Emmy awards show was described as having a “garish, busy and distracting” setting, but the musical numbers had gone smoothly. Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” won in six categories including best record, best album, and best song. The Carpenters had been named best new artist of the year and also won as the best contemporary duo or group vocalists for their song “Close to You.”
