25 years ago: University students protest KUEA investments

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 19, 1986:

  • Several students had set up a tent on Kansas University’s West Campus to protest KU Endowment Association’s investments in corporations that did business in South Africa. The group had pledged to camp at the site until the association took decisive action on the issue.
  • In spite of objections from the Oread Neighborhood Association, the Lawrence city commission unanimously approved a site plan for a 21-unit apartment complex at 1145 La. The lot had been the site of a KU fraternity building which had been razed earlier in the month. A representative from the ONA argued that the building would cause traffic problems, increase drainage problems and present a hazard to pedestrians.
  • The board of trustees of Lawrence Memorial Hospital had agreed to pay $29,000 for marketing campaigns for “image improvement,” featuring family-oriented care and cataract surgery.
