From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 16, 1986:

  • A local citizens group, the Douglas County Citizens for Responsible Development, had recently distributed a ten-point summary of their position and published a paid advertisement in the Journal-World. The list, titled “The Bypass Fact Sheet,” claimed that the proposed Lawrence bypass was “a plan to use public tax money for a costly, unneeded roadway designed to benefit private developers.” The controversial road proposal was entering its second year of study by county and city commissioners.
  • The No. 2-ranked Kansas Jayhawks had earned a victory in the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament in Dayton, beating the Temple Owls 65-43. Coach Larry Brown, in his third year at KU, said, “We’re pleased to be going on.” The next stop was Kansas City, where the Jayhawks would play Michigan State.
  • “We’re doing it just for fun,” said an organizer of the first-ever Springfest to be held in Eudora. April 13 would bring an afternoon of arts and crafts, music and food in the Eudora City Park.
