100 years ago: J-W reporter visits with famous suffragette, discusses votes for women

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 16, 1911:

  • “Any expectation of seeing a militant suffragette with mannish clothing, strident voice and belligerent attitude, will be dissipated when Sylvia Pankhurst gives her lecture here tomorrow. Instead, her audience will see a girlish, almost shrinking figure with grey-blue eyes, a delicately tinted skin and one of those low modulated voices for which the English women are so famous. When the Journal-World reporter visited Miss Pankhurst this morning she was attired in a low morning gown of mouse color. Two worn tan shoes peeped from under her skirts, her sailor collar was loosely held with a boy’s neck tie -- the only masculine article of clothing she wore -- while to the unpractised masculine eye she appeared to be uncircled by a corset. ‘Suffrage is making great progress in America and before the end of the year seven states will have granted equal ballots,’ Pankhurst said. ‘’We will get votes for women in England within a year.... Having no vote is like working with no tools.... Woman should put aside her shrinking from unseemly publicity until she has accomplished something in the suffrage movement. If one is a lady it does not make her any the less womanly to chalk sidewalks and parade in the streets with banners in the aid of any noble cause.... It is better to be sensational in methods than to go around on bended knees begging for privileges never granted.’”
  • “The budget of $10,000 granted some time ago for the improvement of the Union Pacific terminal facilities here, will be expended this month. Many of the main line trains coal here, and the platform of the coaling chute will be doubled in capacity. A new seventy foot turn table will replace the present fifty-six foot table, enabling the largest engines on the division to be handled here. The old round house will be moved fifteen feet to the north to make room for new tracks.”
