Ottawa police said Monday that a 4-year-old boy was killed Saturday afternoon when he was struck by a vehicle without a driver that had rolled down the driveway.

Lt. Adam Weingartner said the incident happened moments after someone had returned the vehicle home to the 1000 block of South Cottonwood Street, but he did not identify the last driver of the vehicle.

He said police have interviewed the boy’s mother, a 41-year-old Ottawa woman, and a boyfriend, also 41 from Ottawa, who were present when the incident happened.

Officers were called just before 3 p.m. Saturday to the residence for a possible injury accident. The boy later died from his injuries at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa. Police did not release the name of the boy Monday.

“Police collected evidence that will be sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation laboratory for analysis,” Weingartner said in a statement. “Alcohol may have been a factor.”

Members of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office’s accident investigation team assisted police. He said officers would continue the investigation and forward information to the Franklin County Attorney’s Office for a decision on filing any possible criminal charges.

No one has been arrested.

How very sad. If alcohol was related but the car was unoccupied when it rolled over the boy, what would the charge be?

This is so sad. So was it one of the parents that accidentally left the car in gear- or maybe a neighbor...?

Sorry - The link didn't work correctly - I tried to remove it but I can't - Here is what I have from other news sources -

The "Driver" was the young boy's 2-year-old sister...... http://www.ottawaherald.com/story/031411breaking_fatality

maybe the vehicle was parked and the gear in park position. Certain vehicle have been known to shift out of park. or maybe it was not accident. needs to be investigated.

You said "maybe it was not accident" You really think someone was trying to kill this kid???? You also say "needs to be investigated." If you read the whole article it states there is an on going investigation. let the Police do their job and stop making crazy speculations about what might have had happened. Very sad story.

The saddest part is this was 100% preventable. Alcohol "may have been involved" in the middle of a Saturday afternoon, while your two young children are playing unattended outdoors. So very sad.

Nothing is 100% preventable. Thats what we call "accidents". Don"t assume it was the parents that were drinking. The article does not state who ,if anyone, was drinking.

The Father was outside at the time of the incident, the local paper reported that their two year old daughter may have knocked the vehicle out of gear. I do not understand why people have to condemn others in this situation, it was an "accident" they happen everyday, and on a different day it could be you or someone you know. We are so quick to judge when we don't know it all. Prayers to this family.
