25 years ago: Thousands of overdue books returned to library

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 13, 1986:

  • About 6,000 overdue books had been turned in during the Lawrence Public Library’s recent fine-free “amnesty week.” One return that gave some amusement to the workers was a book on procrastination that had been due two years earlier. Mary Paretsky, the head of the children’s department, was particularly happy to get back several books that had been checked out of the bookmobile program. The piles of returned books were going to keep workers busy for a while. “It’s like having a flood,” said Mrs. Armbrister, head of the adult circulation department.
  • After resisting the change for more than a decade, NFL owners had voted to use instant replays for the upcoming season to oversee and possibly overrule its officials. “We felt instant replay had become such a fixture that we should give the officials a chance to see what the public was seeing,” said Tex Schramm, president of the Dallas Cowboys and chair of the Competition Committee, which set the rules. Only four teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, voted against the instant replay rule.
