40 years ago: City reports success with new bulky trash pickup program

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 11, 1971:

  • The city of Lawrence had recently begun a new service of picking up bulky items discarded by residents. In the first week of operation, a special crew had hauled two and a half loads of trash and debris from an area south of 15th and east of Louisiana. The crews reported picking up a variety of items, including refrigerators and bedsprings.
  • Movie theaters in Lawrence were showing “Love Story” with Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal, “Five Easy Pieces” with Jack Nicholson, “The Owl and the Pussycat” with Barbra Streisand and George Segal, and “When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth,” with the tagline “Enter an age of unknown terrors, pagan worship and virgin sacrifice…” Rated G!
  • An ad for Gibson’s Discount Center showed products such as Bright Side shampoo, No More Tangles spray-on conditioner, Brylcreem “hair dressing for men,” Vanquish pain reliever (a mixture of aspirin, acetaminophen, and caffeine), an electric corn popper, ladies’ nylon rain scarves, a 2″-square lighted slide viewer, and a six-pack of candy bars for 39 cents.
