From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 10, 1971:

• A heavy, wet snowfall on the previous day was melting off rapidly, leaving only 1.2 inches on the ground as of this morning. Sunny skies and climbing temperatures combined to bring more pleasant weather conditions to the Lawrence area.
• A rural hermit from Mariposa County, California, had refused to leave his fragile shack, where he had lived since 1937, even though his eyesight had been failing for three years. Finally, after getting lost on a walk and nearly dying of exposure and dehydration, he agreed to accept the services of the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in San Francisco, where his cataracts were removed. “I can see pretty good [now],” the 88-year-old said from the hospital as he looked up from a “Playboy” centerfold. He said that he was looking forward of returning to the solitude of his beloved back-country shack, perhaps starting a little grain farm nearby.
