40 years ago: Bad weather on election day not keeping voters away
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 9, 1971:
- Terrible election weather consisting of rain, sleet, and snow was not deterring the voting public from turning out for city commission and school board primary races in Lawrence. A noontime check of the 16 polling places showed 2,293 ballots cast so far, a much higher noon number than previous such elections.
- City officials were asking the help of North Lawrence residents in locating a dog who had bitten a young grade-schooler. If the dog was not found in the next few days, the girl would have to undergo a painful series of rabies vaccinations.
- Items valued at over $1,000 had been stolen some time over the past month from an unoccupied house, according to a police report. A friend of the owners, who had been looking after the vacant property at 1214 Tenn., said that a basement door had been forced and three locked doors in upstairs rooms broken down. The entire house had been ransacked and vandalized, with an estimated three truckloads of furniture, clothing, dishes, and other items taken.
