100 years ago: Bi-plane damaged by crash; aviation meet canceled

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 8, 1911:

  • “One of the largest and most enjoyable family gatherings held to commemorate a golden wedding anniversary assembled at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Buermann near Lake View yesterday. On Saturday night a neighborhood party was given which practically every resident of Lake View district attended. A hearty old fashioned country dinner was served. Yesterday relatives and a few old friends of the Buermanns gathered at their home. The Buermanns are pioneer settlers in this neighborhood having lived at Lake View since coming to Kansas. They are well known throughout Douglas county and entertained their relatives and neighbors yesterday with genuine German hospitality.”
  • “In essaying a flight against adverse weather conditions yesterday, Wm. Evans, aviator, momentarily lost control of his machine and was driven into a fence. The upper plane was crumpled at both ends, and the ribs of the lower plane split and twisted at one end. The cost of repairs will total approximately $150…. Evans, himself, escaped with a tiny scratch on his forehead. The wreck will end the air flights here. Lawrence has not shown the proper spirit towards the proposed aviation meet and the big Green bi-plane will be packed up today and shipped to St. Louis. Instead of contributing their share towards the expenses of the exhibition by paying admission, Lawrence people have shown a tendency to line up outside the park, and watch the proceedings.”
