25 years ago: New Douglas County employees required to live inside county limits

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 5, 1986:

  • In a resolution approved unanimously by county commissioners, it was required that new Douglas County employees must live in the county or plan to move here within nine months of their hire date. The change was to take place on April 1. At that time, only about half a dozen county employees lived outside the county limits.
  • In an attempt to project a newer, more progressive image, the University State Bank at 955 Iowa was changing its name to FIRSTBANK, effective March 17. Bank officials were also requesting a sign variance from the city commissioners that would allow installation of a pole sign to display the bank’s name as well as the time and temperature. A variance was required because only one sign was permitted per each C-2 (neighborhood commercial) zoning district, and there was already a sign at the Hillcrest Shopping Center.
  • The new director of Kansas University’s Office of Study Abroad, Mary Elizabeth Gwin, spoke of her goals for the program, saying that it already enjoyed “a very fine national reputation.” Since the previous summer, more than 300 students had studied abroad through KU’s program, she said.
