Garden City officer nominated for national hero award

? A Garden City police officer who saved a woman’s life by shooting a man who was attacking her has been nominated for a national award.

In January 2010, officer Doug Heit went to the home of Maria Castillo and found her ex-husband stabbing her. Heit shot Gustavo Ramos-Beleta, who was later convicted and sentenced to more than 48 years in prison for the attack.

Garden City police Sgt. Michael Reagle nominated Heit for the America’s Most Wanted All-Star Award. If he’s chosen in an online vote, Heit could win $10,000, a trip to Washington, D.C., and a trip to the NASCAR Sprint Series in Charlotte, N.C.

The Garden City Telegram reports that Heit says if he wins, he’ll give Castillo $5,000 of the award.
