Trego County asks for help with juvenile detention center

? Trego County commissioners are asking state officials, including Gov. Sam Brownback, for help to determine the future of a closed juvenile detention center.

The center closed almost a year ago but the county has not been able to find someone to operate it.

The Hays Daily News reported Wednesday that the commissioners’ requests for help have been rebuffed by the Juvenile Justice Authority and the Department of Corrections.

In response, they contacted Brownback and their local representatives, Sen. Ralph Ostmeyer and Rep. Don Hineman.

The detention center was a joint effort by the county and the state. The state is paying for 90 percent of the construction costs, but the county is responsible for finding someone to operate it.

The county currently is housing delinquent juveniles in Garden City.
