25 years ago: Restricted-access neighborhood planned for west Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 1, 1986:

  • A new sort of neighborhood was being planned for western Lawrence. The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission had recently approved a final plat for a 696-foot-long private drive to serve houses in an eight-acre, 19-lot residential subdivision. The subdivision would also include “exacting landscaping and building requirements.” The development was planned for the area south of Turnberry Drive and west of Inverness.
  • Mike Kirsch, owner of Gammon’s club at 1601 W. 23rd, had recently written a song titled “The Jayhawk Shuffle” to celebrate the success of KU’s No.-2 ranked basketball team. However, the NCAA wanted the song banned because its inclusion of athletes’ names was in violation of a NCAA rule prohibiting athletes from “assisting in and promoting any type of commercial venture.” Kirsch said that he had no intention of causing a problem for KU, but he wondered whether the NCAA had any authority over the work of a private individual.
