Salina man falls for secret shopper scam

? A Salina man has fallen victim to a scam involving an Internet advertisement for a secret shopper.

Police Capt. Mike Sweeney says 39-year-old Jeffrey Cottrell deposited a check for $3,997 that appeared to be from Corvette Central in Sawyer, Mich., but mailed from Canada.

The Salina Journal reports Cottrell withdrew $2,500 on June 13 and $1,400 three days later and wired the money back to the sender, as instructed.

The check was returned to Cottrell’s credit union unpaid after he had made the withdrawals, and now he has to pay the money he withdrew back to the bank.

Sweeney says a representative of Corvette Central, which sells parts and accessories for Corvettes, said numerous fraudulent checks for $3,997 have been received and rejected by the company’s bank.
