25 years ago: Lecompton’s Constitutional Hall passes to state ownership

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 29, 1986:

  • The annual Territorial Day celebration at Lecompton was highlighted by an exchange of property when the local Rebekah Lodge deeded the town’s Constitution Hall to the state of Kansas for $3,500. “Constitution Hall will now be preserved for the future generations to enjoy,” said Mrs. Ione Paslay, noble grand of the lodge, which had been taking care of the historic building since 1894.
  • A 1-cent increase in the state sales tax was set to go into effect on July 1. The Kansas Legislature had voted to increase the tax from 3 to 4 cents on the dollar to raise more money for state services. Because the city of Lawrence had its own half-cent sales tax, local retailers would start charging 4 1/2 cents on the dollar on July 1.
  • The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department announced that they were now offering a new vaccine recommended for young children. The vaccine was designed to reduce the risk of Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib) disease. Hib was estimated to cause about 12,000 cases of meningitis in the U.S. each year.
