40 years ago: Children await unveiling of rocket in Broken Arrow Park

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 27, 1971:

  • A photograph showed a group of highly interested but impatient neighborhood youngsters gathered around the newly-installed rocket in Broken Arrow Park. The playground toy, which had been dubbed “Lokey I” by recreation officials, had been installed and was undergoing final safety checks before officially opening for play on the upcoming weekend.
  • A carelessly tossed cigarette was the cause of a small fire outside the SIC Finance Co. at 946 Massachusetts. Firemen had been called to the scene when it had been reported that the peat moss in a flower bed in front of the office was ablaze. There was no serious damage.
  • At a recent meeting of the Kansas Board of Regents, at least one regent had raised objections to the concept of teacher-student ratios. “If you stick to your 1-15, 1-17 and 1-20 faculty-student ratios, I think we’ll hurt ourselves on our budget requests,” said Henry Bubb of Topeka. “These figures give a bad taste to people who don’t understand the concept.” In other action, the board had approved various small construction projects around the Kansas University campus and had also declared $854,798,49 in delinquent accounts at the KU Medical Center uncollectible.
