100 years ago: Still under construction, Bowersock Opera House lines up fall season
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 27, 1911:
- “J. Griffis, of Vinland, brought in a sheaf of wheat to the Journal-World office that is certainly a fine sample. The wheat is of the Finley variety and is about the best seen here this year. Mr. Griffis says he has a good stand and will get about 30 or 40 bushels to the acre.”
- “The rain of last night was only a local shower and outside of the city the drought proceeds uninterrupted. Even in the city the shower was confined to only certain parts, and other parts of town were untouched by the moisture. Massachusetts street seems to have been the center of the rain area…. People seemed to enjoy the rain and ran around in it all the time. It was mighty refreshing after the hot, sultry day that was just over. But the ground was dry and parched and the moisture was quickly taken up and this morning it is almost as dry as before.”
- “Already the New York agents for the Bowersock Opera House are booking shows for the coming season and a partial list of these has been received by the Bowersock managers here. The list shows that the attractions to be given in the new theater are to be of the best obtainable. Madam Sherry, Servant in the House, and the Girl in the Taxi, these are among the strong shows on the road today and have past seasons of success to back them. Work on the new theater is being rushed as fast as possible and it will be completed by the opening of the fall season.”
