40 years ago: Good news for wheat, bad news for corn

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 26, 1971:

  • The weather forecast for the upcoming days might not have made everyone happy, but for those harvesting wheat, it was perfect. Recent scorching days had been just what was needed for ripening and drying out the county’s wheat. Temperatures had reached 100 degrees in downtown Lawrence on the previous day, with 98 reported at Kansas University. The harvest was well underway, with 30,000 to 40,000 bushels of wheat having been taken in at the Farmers’ Co-Op elevator, but the peak was still expected to come during the following week.
  • A good week for wheat, but a bad one for corn: The recently-reported Southern Corn Leaf Blight had spread farther than previously realized. Kansas State University plant pathologists were now reporting that the infection had been detected in at least 10 Kansas counties. A special meeting on identifying and controlling the blight had been scheduled at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, and all farmers in the area were urged to attend.
