25 years ago: Residents polled on controversial local issues

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 26, 1986:

  • A recent poll by a Kansas University political science professor asked 600 local residents about some of the recent hot-button issues in Lawrence. The results indicated strong support for a waiting period for handgun purchases; support for a downtown shopping mall (but opposition to the use of taxpayers’ money to fund the project); strong support for a ban on smoking in public buildings; and a change in the local government structure to a full-time mayor and commissioners elected from districts.
  • Some of the shows available to Lawrence movie-goers this week were “Top Gun,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Back to School,” “Legal Eagles,” “The Karate Kid Part II,” “Space Camp,” and “The Manhattan Project.” Other entertainment options included a performance by Matt “Guitar” Murphy scheduled for July 2 at the Jazzhaus.
