100 years ago: Potter Lake to open for public swimming

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 26, 1911:

  • “Lawrence is to have real sea shore privileges this summer. Potter Lake is to be opened to the public for bathing and swimming purposes. When the lake was first constructed it was not the intention that it should be used for bathing at all. It was soon seen however that it would become very popular among the boys as well as among the men and women of Lawrence, and it served the purpose of keeping the boys away from the river which is a dangerous place owing to the frequent shifting of the sands and the dangerous under currents.”
  • “Harry Kemp returned from the harvest fields last night after having been gone several weeks. Kemp says he found work all right, but it was too much for him and he had to give it up. He says he obtained his inspiration all right, and will soon have his poem on the wheat fields written.”
