Around and About for June 25, 2011

Norma McCanles Kampschroeder will celebrate her 100th birthday Wednesday. She will be honored at a reception given by her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Deane Holmes of Prairie Village. Norma still likes to visit with friends and shop at Weaver’s, her favorite department store for more than 70 years. She has worked in the business community for more than 50 years starting as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. During World War II, she worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, and shortly after the war, she began working as office manager for Sanders Motor Company. She is a charter member of the American Business Women’s Association and a member of the Credit Women’s Club. She sang for many years with the Lawrence Chapter of Sweet Adeline’s and served as president of the Lawrence Humane Society. She is a member of the Lawrence Lady Shrine, the Kanwaka Extension Group and Trinity Lutheran Church.

Lois (Hildenbrand) Condley, Lawrence, celebrated her 77th birthday on Wednesday. Her family is planning a surprise card shower. Cards may be sent to 2219 SW Mission Ave., Topeka, KS 66604.

More than 75 Kansas State University students spent their week of spring break in service to others. Alternative spring break 2011, March 20-25, was an opportunity for students to participate in service learning projects coordinated by the K-State School of Leadership Studies.

Alternative spring break locations included: Florence Crittenton School in Denver, Roseland/Pullman Boys and Girls Club in Chicago, Katrina’s Kids Project in New Orleans, La, various service projects in Taos, N.M. St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. AIDS Service in Dallas; and One Mission Galveston in Galveston, Texas.

K-State students participating and their project location included: Kayla Knoll of Baldwin City, Taos, Connor Hartpence of Eudora, Memphis, Patrick Hinrichsen of Lecompton and Nicole Allan of Tonganoxie, Galveston.

Matt Perry, Lawrence, a senior at Hayden High School in Topeka, has received an academic scholarship from Washburn University for the 2011-12 academic year. Perry was recognized at a March 29 scholarship banquet at Washburn.
