40 years ago: Lawrence man takes to the high seas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 25, 1971:

Dr. Byron Walters had just returned to Lawrence after a deep-sea voyage which he had undertaken with his son. He had set out on a six-day sail in the eastern Indian Ocean and China Sea with Maj. William Walters and another friend, but they had encountered bad weather all the way with “mountainous” seas and high winds. The violent weather had soaked their clothes, and the pitching of the boat had prevented any cooking or even boiling of water, so they had subsisted on canned drinks, canned meat, crackers, peanut butter and jelly. Being out of sight of land for five days had added to the tension and uncertainty of the trip, but after having made harbor late on June 12, Dr. Walters said that he and his son had grown closer during the trip: “Fear brought us together.”
