Family honored with $1M bequest to K- State

? A California man who never attended Kansas State University has made a $1 million bequest to the school to honor his many relatives who studied or taught at the Manhattan campus.

Alan Porter is an independent real estate investor in Santa Barbara, Calif. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska and a law degree from the University of Denver.

But Kansas State holds a special place in his heart. His father, Clare Porter, and mother, Georgiana Avery Porter, both earned bachelor’s degrees there, and one uncle received a doctorate in 1940. His uncle Thomas B. Avery headed the poultry department, and Thomas Avery Jr. was a professor of veterinary medicine.

Porter’s bequest to the College of Agriculture will establish the Porter and Avery Family Agriculture Scholarship.
