100 years ago: Burglaries continue in downtown, residential areas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 24, 1911:

“Someone entered the Sneegass second hand store last night and stole three .22 caliber rifles. The officers have a clue as to the guilty parties and are at work on the case. Yesterday afternoon the officers received a call from the Kennedy & Ernst Hardware store in the 800 block. Someone was seen tampering with the rear entrance. The officers went down and immediately came to the conclusion that there would be a robbery of a hardware store in the near future. They patrolled the back alleys the best they could and had made one trip around when they received a hurry-up call from West Lawrence. When they returned they made another trip and upon arriving at the Sneegass store found where it had been entered. Footprints were found in the alley at the rear of the store where the thief had jumped from the back porch onto the ground…. The call from the west side was that the man who has been so active in that part of late was seen in the back yard at 703 Indiana street. The police went out as quickly as possible but their man had fled and they were unable to find any trace of him.”
