25 years ago: Lawrence residents remember tornado five years earlier

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 19, 1986:

  • School board members were scheduled to vote at their next meeting on changes to the school system’s medication policy. The new policy, the first to be put in writing, would include a few changes to the existing rules, including a standardized permission form and record-keeping.
  • Lawrence residents, particularly those in the southwestern neighborhoods, were remembering the tornado that had struck the city five years earlier. The storm, which had passed through the area at about 7:30 p.m., had caused the death of one man and the destruction or severe damage of 15 houses, more than 100 mobile homes, and several businesses along Iowa Street. In all, damage had been estimated at $18 million, but five years later, it was difficult to find any outward physical signs of the storm’s damage.
