25 years ago: Traffic light approved for Ninth and Maine

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 18, 1986:

  • Lawrence City Commissioners voted 4-1, with David Longhurst opposing, to approve the request for a traffic light at Ninth and Maine streets. The proposal was one of many traffic-safety issues that were discussed at length, causing the meeting to last until after midnight. Representatives from the Old West Lawrence Neighborhood Assn. had favored postponing the action until further study had been done to investigate the light’s possible effect on the residential area.
  • City commissioners also discussed the unsavory topic of “sludge” — the “effluent remains of treated human waste.” Property owners east of the city’s sewage treatment plant at the east end of Eighth Street were concerned about additional land being acquired for sludge disposal.
